The incident took place in Calverton around 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, July 24.
According to the Riverhead Police, officers responded to a home on Fresh Pond Avenue for a report of a Hispanic man that approached the residence seeking help after being stabbed in the neck.
Daniel Saavedra, age 48, of Queens, told responding officers that earlier in the evening he was a passenger in a vehicle with his then-girlfriend Claudia Patricia Garcia Vargas, age 53, of Queens, police said.
While driving, Garcia Vargas stopped her vehicle on the side of the roadway on Freshpond Avenue in Calverton and she allegedly attacked him with an unknown type of knife or sharp object, cutting his neck which caused substantial pain, bleeding, and required hospitalization, police added.
Saavedra was transported by the Wading River Fire Department to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of his injuries, police said.
On Tuesday, Aug. 2, after further investigation, detectives arrested Garcia Vargas, in Queens, with the assistance of New York City Police Department detectives, the department said.
Garcia Vargas was transported to the Riverhead Police Department where she was charged with the following:
- Attempted murder
- Assault
- Criminal possession of a weapon
She was processed and held for arraignment.
The investigation remains ongoing.
